Penn State recently hosted Virginia RB Derrick Green on campus and Green left very impressed. At least he said so at the time. He told me shortly after the visit that he would be taking another trip to Happy Valley in a couple months for a game.
Following that, Green was seen in Atlanta, getting comfortable with Penn State commitment Christian Hackenberg at the Rivals camp. Hackenberg was admittedly doing some recruiting over that weekend and things were looking up as far as Penn State’s chances with Green.
Something must have changed since then.
Green announced his “Lucky 13″ via Facebook yesterday, and Penn State, strangely, did not make the list. The teams who did are Tennesse, Michigan, Oregon, Ohio state, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Clemson, Alabama, Miami, Pitt, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma state.
If there is a silver lining, it’s that a “top 13″ isn’t a very narrow list. Penn State may be able to get back into the picture for the 4 star Virginia product, unless something happened behind the scenes. Green is one of the best RBs recruits in the country according to all of the major recruiting services and, for my money, may be the best that the class of 2013 has to offer.
This is particularly bad news for Penn State because they are really only recruiting two running backs and Derrick Green is/was one. The other is Philadelphia standout David Williams.
David maintains that he is very high on Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have shown that they are not comfortable at any position with all of their eggs in one basket. I would expect some feelers to go out soon to other running backs, if not an offer or two. Keep in mind that New Jersey RB Zaire Williams is very high on Penn State and was on campus last week for a camp and visit.
