Penn State Nabs Third Linebacker in June: Zayd Issah Commits

Seems like recently, these guys ^^^^^ have been taking over VBR! It seems like anything I say here would be cliche` so I’ll just go with Hooray, June! Penn State has now received six verbal commitments in the month of June, including some of the top recruits from the state of Pennsylvania.

Harrisburg (Central Dauphin) Linebacker/Athlete Zayd Issah pulled the trigger today and committed to Bill O’Brien and staff. Much like Zach Bradshaw, who committed earlier this week, Zayd is an extremely versatile player, but will likely play linebacker for Penn State. Almost certainly, to be more precise.

However, Zayd did rush for 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns over the last two seasons for the AAAA PA State Champions. As a matter of fact, his junior season (2011) was Zayd’s first as a linebacker. You wouldn’t know that by watching his film, though. Issah racked up 123 tackles and 14 sacks last season while learning how to play the position.

Many have wondered, myself included, if Penn State would be interested in taking four linebacker in this class, due to the lack of depth among the lower classmen. I think that taking two dynamic LBs like Bradshaw and Issah cements their ability to take another linebacker, but it will need to be the right guy. I’m not sure the staff will save a spot for New Jersey’s Al-Rasheed Benton, who appeared to be a Penn State lock. However, if Alex Anzalone wants to be a part of this class, O’Brien will surely find a spot.

Zayd is the former teammate of Evan Schwan, a defensive end who committed to PSU in February and recenltly enrolled. In an interview with Evan, he told me that he was recruiting Zayd heavily, but disclosed off the record that he wasn’t sure Penn State had a great shot. Looks like some things have changed since then.
