Penn State lost one of the higher-rated recruits left on the board Saturday when offensive tackle Derwin Gray committed to Maryland. A few hours later, unsurprisingly, Derwin’s friend and teammate, linebacker Yannick Ngakoue also verbally committed to the Terapins.
Derwin Gray is listed as the 6th best OT in the country by Rivals and the 4th at his position by 247Sports. He was at the Penn State Spring game in April and was, at one point, scheduled to visit Penn State this past weekend. That visit did not happen.
His close friend Yannick Ngakoue was with him at Penn State in April and had openly voiced his desire to play collegiate ball with Gray. He is listed as the 15th OLB in the country by Rivals and the number 20 ILB by 247Sports. Both services list Derwin and Yannick as the number one and two recruits in Washington, DC.
This duo is a big get for Maryland. With Gray off the board, Penn State will put the full court press on Dorian Johnson between now and his announcement. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple more offensive tackle offers go out in the next couple weeks, just for insurance.
