With Mike Mauti recovering from fall surgery and Khairi Fortt sitting out Spring Practice following a dislocated knee, the linebacking corps was a bit depleted and lacking experience. On Wednesday, those problems got worse.
5th year senior LB James Van Fleet apparently went down with a knee injury during the open-to-the-media portion of practice on Wednesday and was seen walking with a limp once he got up. Ryan Snyder of Blue White Illustrated reported on Thursday that Van Fleet has a torn ACL and will miss the season, possibly ending his career at Penn State.
With Mauti and Fortt out, Van Fleet had been practicing with the 1st string linebackers (Hodges, Carson) during the Spring. I’m not entirely sure how the depth chart shakes out, but I’d expect Mike Hull to see some snaps at the week-side linebacker spot in the absence of Van Fleet. It’s nice to have Army All American reserves, but this unit really needs Fortt and Mauti to stay healthy for the 2012 season.
