Ryan Switzer has been named to ESPN’s Top 150 List of recruits for 2013 after winning the WV Gatorade Player of the Year in a junior season that saw him score 45 total touchdowns. He will be in State College Saturday for the Penn State Junior Day and he was kind enough to speak with me Thursday night about that trip and some other things.
I heard you spoke with Coach O’Brien this morning. Can you walk me through a call like that?
“It went really well. We hit it off immediately and just got familiar with each other. We clicked, right off the bat. We talked about football and how he would want to use me. He talked about me playing wide receiver and moving back to play running back at times.”
You played primarily running back last year in high school, but you’re projected as a WR in college. How do you feel about that/ is there a position you prefer?
“I’m a slot guy. I played there as a sophomore but our running back graduated so coach moved me back to running back and it went pretty well, but I’ll be a wide receiver in college.”
People are quick to compare you to Wes Welker- especially Penn State fans with O’Brien on the mind. I recently compared you to Darren Sproles -who do YOU think that you compare to?
“The guy who I have kind of tried to emulate in my play is actually Tavon Austin of West Virginia.”
Tavon Austin? Where? (He caught me off guard with that one.)
“Yeah, he scored 5 TDs against Clemson in the Orange Bowl…? We played against him when I was a freshman and I was just so impressed. You have got to see his highlights. He’s amazing.”
Your highlight reel lists an assortment of accomplishments from your 100 meter state finishing to your Gatorade Player of the Year award last year- which accolade has meant the most to you?
“It’s probably the basketball state championship we won when I was a freshman. I know it’s not a football thing, but it was really special. It was a team achievement. I got to start on that team and help a great group of seniors achieve that.”
You interact with several other recruits on twitter- is there a lot of recruiting within the recruits?
“I think we’re just all feeling each other out, trying to build relationships. We’re all kind of going into this together, but we don’t really know one another so we’re trying to find out about each other more than anything.”
You’re visiting Penn State for the 3rd time this weekend. What are you looking forward to on your visit?
“I’m real interested to meet the new Strength and Conditioning coach. I’m big on that and I think that’s one of the most important things that a school can do to prepare kids, is to prepare them in the weight room.”
Do you have a timetable for committing?
“Hopefully by the end of the summer. I want to commit before the season because I plan on graduating in January, so I’m going to be an early enrollee at whichever school I choose.”
Are you planning on waiting until then, or would you commit before then if you decided?
“If I’m blown away by a place, I feel real comfortable and I know that’s where I want to be, I’ll commit. And once I decide, I’ll do it right then. I won’t wait once I know.”
Ryan also added that he isn’t sure if he will be able to make it back to Penn State for the Spring Game. He was recently offered by UNC and Arizona and will be in Chapel Hill in early March for a visit. He visited WVU and Ohio State last weekend.
