Review: Iowa vs Penn State

Defensive Backs

A good game from this group, with some nice individual performances as well.  Astorino is playing phenomenal this year, and that continued against Iowa.  Flat out, he is one of the smartest players on the field.  He has a lot of responsibility being the Hero, and really does do well.  No reason he should be the “whipping boy”, as he has been in the pass.  Malcolm Willis also played a really good game, even if he doesn’t get that INT.  Meanwhile, Sukay struggled.  Last year, it was looking like he was making some improvements but he’s starting to struggle again.  He’s just too late to the play.

Amos had a good game as well.  I think the love for him is too much right now, but it’s expected since he is a freshman that is playing really well.  He’s big at 6’1-6’2/210, has very good speed, and tackles like you should tackle.  He came into Penn State expecting to play Safety, but it’s obvious CB is where he’ll stay.  Really, it doesn’t matter where he plays.  He’s going to be a really good player for the next 4 years.  Powell was Powell.  Solid DB, but didn’t do anything special.

Finally.  Feels good to have some great linebacking play again, consistently too.  Last year was a step back for LBU, but it’s now obvious that this LB group is what PSU expects.  Hell, that’s even without Michael Mauti.

Basically, Gerald Hodges has stopped thinking.  He’s going out there and just playing football, and now we are seeing what his size, athleticism, and speed can do.  Same goes for Fortt.  He’s gotten it a little bit quicker than Hodges, but once again…he has it all and now he’s playing like a Penn State linebacker should.  I really do think Hodges will be a very good player, but Fortt has the chance to be an absolutely great player.  Fortt’s role will continue to grow.

Defensive Line

Not the best outing from this DL, but still a good game overall.  They stopped the running game for the most part, and this group finally got some pressure mainly from the blitzing.  Still didn’t dominate, which is a step down form his normal performance.  Hill struggled a little bit, and really didn’t make any amazing plays but still held his own.  Stanley got a little bit of pressure, and Crawford also played a pretty good game.  Lattimore actually had the best game out of the DEs.

Offensive Line

Best performance group wise, but was the normal individual performances.  Troutman was very good, Stank did pretty well, Okoli and Barham did so-so, and Pannell struggled.  Urschel got a lot of time in this game, most of the 2nd and 4th actually, and did better than Pannell.  Definitely want to see Urschel inserted into the OL permanently.

Wide Receiver

Made all the catches they were suppose to, and even made some very tough catches.  Brown and Moye both had good games.  Noting really much to say here as PSU just pounded the rock most of the day.

Running Back

Silas Redd is awesome.  Curtis Dukes hits the hole with authority, and is really explosive.  What a great 1-2 duo, and like I said in the reaction article, I would be OK with limited Beachum.  Also, Green got in for I believe one play…screen.

Like I said, McGloin should be starting.  At this point, he’s the best QB on the roster.  As for Bolden, it’s time to sit him down.  He was thrown into the fire too early and now he’s burnt.  He needs to get out of the limelight, and learn the position in time.  Not a crash course like it’s been.  He just needs things to slow down because right now everything seems to be going 110 MPH.

Exciting next few weeks for Penn State.  After looking terrible last week, they bounced back and now have a lot of confidence.  They have a real shot of winning every single game (minus Wisconsin).  More on that tomorrow, as I’ll go over the rest of the games.
