Penn State Recruiting 4/28/11

Sorry I’ve been away for a while.  Good news is that the summer is when things slow down for me so more consistent writing from here on out.  Lets get right into it…

I believe the last time I talked to you PSU had commitments from Anthony Stanko, Camren Williams, Brent Wilkerson, and Jesse James  Since then, Penn State has added two more verbals.  Let me tell you, they were big (literally).

First, Penn State received a commitment from Jamil Pollard (6’4 285 DT from NJ).  Pollard is a 1-Tech DT, but looks like he could be a very good OG too.  Very strong and large frame, like a Devon Still.  Visited PSU, went home, and decided PSU was where he wanted to be.  He was perceived as a PSU lean for a while so not to shocking, but certainly welcomed.

Pollard had offers from Iowa, Rutgers, Alabama, and Florida so good company in there.  On 247 sports, he is rated a 4-Star and ranked 155, and on Scout, he ranked a 3-Star.  Rivals only has out 5-Star rankings and a Watch list…he is on neither.  All in all, a nice pick up.

The 6th commitment is a “soft verbal”.  What a soft verbal is?  I’ll get to later.  As to who soft verbal’d, it was none other than Jarron Jones (During a visit).  A 6’6 300 DT from New York.  When I brought up Jones months ago, I said he would be a 3-Star because he is from NY, and NY guys are always underrated.  Well, Jones blew up.  He has offers from: Florida State, Florida, Notre Dame, UNC, Bama, Michigan, Miami, Iowa, Pitt, BC, Syracuse, UConn, and Rutgers.  He is a 5-star on Scout and 247, and will be highly rated on Rivals.

A really good comparison for Jones is Temple’s Muhammad Wilkerson (Soon to be a Top 15 Draft Pick).  Both 6’5-6’6, both carry their weight very well (300-315), and both are extremely athletic.  Wilkerson played DT in college, and could still play DT in the NFL, but is getting looked at as a 3-4 DE.  Jones will/should be the same type of player.  Unlimited potential.

Now, what is a soft verbal?  Basically, it means Jones has his spot at PSU, but is still looking around.  After he verbal’d to PSU, he talked about the other schools he is looking at.  Look at all those huge “football factories”.  Just some dominating programs.  Who will PSU be fighting off for this 6’6 300 athletic freak?  In order…Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers, and UNC.  With Notre Dame, Boston College, and UCoon having shots at getting an official visit.  This isn’t a knock on the other four (seven with the other three) programs, but when he is boasting offers from football powers…it shows what his motive is.  He wants to stay close to home.  Which obviously plays great with PSU.

He’s had trouble visiting because of his situation.  His parents work a lot, and he just doesn’t have the chance to visit.  So all of these visits will be official visits during the season.  Is this verbal secure?  No.  Do I expect Jones to be playing at PSU?  Absolutely.  Just think of Jones as a major lean to PSU.

As of a few weeks ago, PSU had a Top 8 class.  Don’t know how that has changed, but the point being is that PSU is off to a great start.  Something we didn’t see last year.  When did we get our 6th verbal last year?  November 28th.  PSU Recruiting: Night and Day.
